BOBBY "BORIS" PICKETT (1938-2007) is the only recording artist to have his record reach the Billboard Hot 100 in three separate years: 1962, 1970, 1973. "MONSTER MASH" has sold millions of copies WorldWide, and is one of the best-remembered novelty songs of all-time !
"MONSTER MASH" receives airplay on thousands of radio stations across the Country - and the World - every year ! A fitting tribute to it's blend of comedy, it's lyrics, and, a solid beat that sets the pace & rhythm for the entire length of the song. Plus, the back-up chorus is just spot-on perfect !
Bobby was born on February 11, 1938 in Somerville, Massachusetts, and died at the age of 69 on April 25, 2007 in Los Angeles, California, due to complications from leukemia.
"JUMPIN' GENE" SIMMONS (1933-2006) was born in "Elvis Country": Tupelo, Mississippi, on July 10, 1933 and was actually a stablemate of Elvis' when he was signed to the Sun label in 1958 and was an opening act for the "King".
His career at Sun was short lived, and in 1964 he did a cover of a Johnny Fuller recording called "HAUNTED HOUSE" for his new label "HI" Records. "Haunted House" was one of the earliest Chart Topper's for the newly formed "HI", peaking at #11 on the Billboard Chart.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE, this writer's memories of "Haunted House" are vivid ! I had been going to school in California, and was living in Los Angeles , when I began my journey to move back to my home in St. Louis on the 1st of October, 1964.
As was the custom in those days, I had packed up my '57 Dodge Royal Hardtop and was heading back to St. Louis on what was to become "The Mother Road"...ROUTE 66.
Keeping my radio tuned-in to Rock & Roll all the way home, NO MATTER WHICH station I tuned into throughout the trip, day-or-night, the one song that kept blasting through the airwaves was "HAUNTED HOUSE" by "Jumpin' Gene" Simmons ! In fact, I'm sure if I found that old Dodge today and cranked up the speakers, I bet "Haunted House" is probably still playing !
Jumpin' Gene passed away August 29, 2006, at his home in Tupelo, at the age of 73 after a long illness. But, I'll never forget him helping me make it back to my home on that long, lonely drive in October of 1964.
